About Engagement Projects

Up to $10k for project work and $1K for project management support, 1 year. $5K cap if other funding is being accessed.

The South Island MSA has focused its Facility Engagement funding towards grassroots physician-led engagement and quality improvement projects. Since 2017, hundreds of projects have been launched by South Island physicians looking to improve their workplace, relationships, and patient care. By offering $10,000 micro-grants with a one-year time limit, the South Island MSA is able to support physician-led improvement across the region, sometimes supporting work that also fits within Health System Redesign, Physician Quality Improvement or other funding streams.

What could it look like?

How does it work?

  • Vetted by MSA Administrators, Doctors of BC, and Island Heath operational leaders. Pre-approval by Core Group of 5 physicians. If a project receives a ‘yellow light’ from the Core group, the Project Lead must attend the Working Group meeting to provide further information about the project. Final approval by Working Group.
  • Proposal Evaluation Criteria:
    • Impact - Can you see this activity influencing positive change for the medical staff’s work environment or patient care?
    • Trust - Do you think this activity is likely to foster meaningful interactions (e.g., trust, transparency, and respect) between physicians or between physicians and the health authority members?
    • MOU alignment - Does the activity clearly align with the MOU objectives?
    • Physician support - If applicable, is this activity supported by a broad spectrum of physicians at this site (e.g., multiple departments, multiple disciplines)?
    • Health authority support - If applicable, does this activity have health authority support (e.g., health authority sponsor or funding/in-kind commitment)?
    • Suitability - Is the MSA the appropriate funding source for this activity?
    • Accountability - Would the MSA be able to publicly defend the proposed initiative as an appropriate use of public funding?
    • Sustainability - If required, is the proposed initiative able to stand on its own without continued sustainment funding?
    • Feasibility - In your opinion, does this activity have a reasonable chance of success?
    • Final decision - Based on the above assessments, my final recommendation for this project is Recommend Funding, Do not recommend funding, Needs more information.
  • Supports Available – MSA Administrators can advise on how to best write proposals for the Working Group’s consideration. MSA Administrators and Island Health operational leaders can help set the project up for success by connecting Project Leads with internal resources. A list of vetted Project Managers is available for Project Leads to consider for contracted project support. Project plan templates and other project management tools are available.
  • Interim evaluation – sent by MSA administrators at 50% time or budget. Required for continued funding.
  • Post-project evaluation – sent by MSA administrators at 100% time or budget. Required for final claims approval. Follow-up call for Success Story Interview (compensated outside of project funding envelope).
