Success Story: The BMO Police Shooting: Completing the Story

From Island Health’s The Weekly:

The BMO Police Shooting in June 2022 shook our community and sent six injured police officers to RJH and VGH.  on June 29, 2023, a multidisciplinary group gathered at Royal Colwood Golf Club  to “complete the story” of this rare, high impact, multi-casualty event.

Twenty members of the Victoria and Saanich Police Departments attended, as well as approximately 60 staff from the emergency rooms, operating rooms, ICU, trauma, Island Health administration, transfusion medicine, and Victoria Hospitals Foundation, most of whom were personally involved in the care of the officers.

We heard from Damian Pellew, Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team; Dr. Mark Vu, anesthesia, trauma, and medical director for the Victoria Police; and Dr. Dennis Kim, trauma surgery and ICU.  Both formal presentations and informal discussion contributed to a night of reflection, connection, celebration, and hugs for our cops.  Perhaps most importantly, we left with a better understanding of how our various services function, interact, and intersect.

Thanks to the South island Facilities Engagement Initiative for funding this event!
