End of Life Care: Serious Illness Conversation Guide

Project Details

  • Departments/Divisions: Palliative Medicine
  • Physician Leads: Dr. Leah MacDonald, Palliative Medicine
  • Budget: $10,749.00

About the Project

South Island Facility Engagement Initiative (SIFEI) funding enabled physician training in the Serious Illness Conversation Guide, a structured approach to end-of-life planning with patients. Dr. MacDonald’s workshop was held in order to provide coaching in the “how to” approach conversations about goals of care with patients who have life-limiting illnesses.  Over 40 physicians and allied health personnel attended, including representation from nephrology, cardiology, respirology and intensive care. Feedback from the workshop was enthusiastic and one physician remarked, “this enriched my skills at dealing with difficult topics in life limiting illnesses.” Another stated, “I’ve now been given a framework to help guide me.”
